Grolsch is always looking for ways to reduce its carbon emissions and energy use in a bid to becoming a net-zero brewery by 2030, run entirely on sustainably generated energy.

Twence
"Grolsch has set itself the challenging ambition of becoming a net-zero brewery by 2030. The collaboration with Twence is making an important contribution to this. We produce the heat we supply from biomass derived non-recyclable waste wood. This means that the energy is generated entirely from green sources. Grolsch uses the hot water to heat pasteurisers and rinsing machines and to heat its buildings. This unique collaboration enables Grolsch to save several million cubic metres of natural gas every year. The savings in natural gas also result in a significant reduction in CO2 emissions. With the expansion of heat and steam supply to urban heating networks and large industrial consumers, Twence can make more energy available to households and regional industry. This is a great contribution to the sustainability ambitions for our region and for Grolsch in particular. What I like about our collaboration is the drive on both sides to contribute to the regional energy transition."

"The realisation of heat networks is not straightforward and requires considerable perseverance. Grolsch, in collaboration with Twence, has demonstrated this determination and is thereby achieving significant energy and CO2 emissions savings. In Twente, industrial activity offers great potential for utilising residual heat. Instead of allowing this residual heat to escape into the air, it is now being put to good and sustainable use. "At Grolsch, we are committed to producing as water-efficiently as possible and reducing our water consumption as much as we can. At our brewery, we direct the water from the bottle rinsing machine to the crate washers to rinse the crates. That is direct reuse. We are also looking at solutions whereby we can reuse our purified waste water as rinsing water, a circular water source."
